Nine former federal prosecutors and one former federal defender anchor the Cooley Godward Kronish’s White Collar & Regulatory Defense practice. All 10 of these attorneys have substantial courtroom experience. Four are Fellows of the American College of Trial Lawyers. And New York Magazine, the International Who’s Who of Business Lawyers and Best Lawyers in America have named three as among the best in this field. One is a former U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of California, one is a former Associate Attorney General and Acting Associate Attorney General of the United States and several others have held significant supervisory level positions in United States Attorney’s offices around the country. As a result, we are able to offer clients both depth and breadth of experience in the area of white collar and regulatory defense.
Our team has experience with a broad range of criminal issues, including insider trading and other forms of securities fraud, bank fraud, federal and state tax fraud, price fixing and other types of anti-competitive conduct, environmental crimes, false advertising, defense procurement fraud, money laundering, public corruption and foreign corrupt practices. In the current regulatory environment, criminal investigations rarely proceed in isolation. Clients in criminal investigations often find themselves defending parallel civil litigations, and clients in civil litigations need to protect themselves against criminal investigations. We have extensive experience representing clients in parallel matters and are adept at handling the unique issues they present.
In addition to representing clients who are subjects or targets of criminal or regulatory investigations, the Firm’s White Collar & Regulatory Defense practice also assists businesses and institutions in developing internal controls and security programs that minimize the potential disruption to their clients’ operations due to external challenges posed by government agencies and private litigants. Companies that work under government contracts, operate in the healthcare and financial industries or service other highly regulated areas benefit the most from those services.
We approach each case by analyzing the client’s specific problem, predicting with some certainty the likely course that the investigation will take and then developing a strategy that delivers the best results possible. Whenever necessary, we work with attorneys from Cooley’s other litigation practices in order to formulate and support the overall case strategy.
