Renee Schwartz, Senior Counsel

Renee Schwartz is a special counsel in the Estate Planning and Personal Representation practice at Cooley LLP, and is resident in the New York office. Ms. Schwartz joined Kronish Lieb Weiner & Hellman LLP in 1990, which merged into Cooley Godward Kronish LLP in 2006.

Ms. Schwartz represents a large number of high net-worth individuals and families in connection with the management and planning of their wealth.  She counsels clients with respect to all aspects of estate planning including wills and trusts, prenuptial and post-nuptial agreements, gifts, family business problems and the creation and administration of private charitable foundations.  Ms. Schwartz counts among her clients more than a dozen families whom she has represented through three generations.

Ms. Schwartz has a substantial matrimonial practice.  Over the last several years, her matrimonial clients have included law firm partners, investment bankers, owners of closely-held businesses, doctors and corporate executives (or their spouses).  While Ms. Schwartz succeeds in resolving most matrimonial matters without litigation, she has represented matrimonial clients in mediations, at trial and on appeal.

Ms. Schwartz represents a number of business clients, primarily in the field of publishing, including W.W. Norton & Company, Inc., literary agents and authors.  In addition to ordinary corporate transactions such as the purchase and sale of publishing entities, Ms. Schwartz is often called upon to vet manuscripts prior to publication in an effort to avoid issues of libel, invasion of privacy and copyright infringement.

Prior to joining Kronish Lieb, Ms. Schwartz was partner of Botein, Hays & Sklar, where she practiced from 1955 through the end of 1989.

Ms. Schwartz earned an LLB from Columbia University School of Law in 1955, where she was a member of the Columbia Law Review and a Stone Scholar.  She received her B.A. magna cum laude from Brooklyn College in 1953, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.

Ms. Schwartz is admitted to practice in New York and is a member of the bars of the United States Supreme Court, the Second Circuit, the Southern and Eastern District of New York, and the Washington D.C. District Court.
