Ruth Hauswirth, Directorof Litigation & E-Discovery Services and Professional Development

Ruth C. Hauswirth is the director of Cooley's Litigation and E-Discovery department and Professional Development department. Resident in the San Diego office, she is also a senior attorney in Cooley's Litigation department.

As director of the Firm's Litigation and E-Discovery department, Ms. Hauswirth collaborates with practice group leaders firm wide to ensure that Cooley's attorneys and clients benefit from strategic use of technology solutions, tools, and services on complex litigation matters and deals.  In this role, she has developed, and now manages, Cooley's electronic discovery resources and assists corporate and litigation attorneys working with clients on strategic issues related to document retention, management, preservation, collection, review and production in compliance with a variety of regulatory and jurisdictional areas.

Ms. Hauswirth is also responsible for the Firm's Professional Development department.  In collaboration with attorneys firm-wide, she develops the content for Cooley's training programs including "Cooley College" for new attorneys as well as advanced seminars, skills workshops, multidisciplinary programs and training programs in specific practice groups and disciplines.  She coordinates with Cooley's marketing personnel to present this content to clients, as well.  Ms. Hauswirth also oversees the Firm's Continuing Legal Education (CLE) program in all offices and is active in establishing orientation programs for both summer associates, first year associates and lateral attorneys.  Additionally, Ms. Hauswirth contributes to the development and teaching of training programs for Firm managers and staff, including paralegal and secretarial professionals.

Ms. Hauswirth serves on the Firm's Risk Management Committee where she is involved in the creation and implementation of risk management policies, training, and compliance programs.

From 2000 to 2011, Ms. Hauswirth was also responsible for the Firm's Professional Development department. Ms. Hauswirth joined Cooley in 1995. From 1999-2000, Ms. Hauswirth served as Assistant Dean for Law and Technology at Santa Clara University School of Law.  During her tenure, she developed and managed the school's nationally-recognized High Tech Law Program and Intellectual Property Program and curriculum.  She has served as an adjunct professor at Santa Clara University School of Law where she taught "Learning From Practice," a seminar course associated with the Law School's legal internship program.

Ms. Hauswirth recently authored an article for the ABA Section of Litigation entitled Corporate Preservation Efforts Require More than Latchkey Custodians.

In 2000, Ms. Hauswirth was named one of the Bay Area's Top Lawyers under Forty by the San Francisco Daily Journal.

Ms. Hauswirth received a J.D. summa cum laude in 1994 from the Santa Clara University School of Law. She received a B.A. magna cum laude in sociology from the University of California at San Diego in 1990.

Ms. Hauswirth is a member of the State Bar of California and the American Bar Association, as well as the San Diego County Bar Association.
