The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) presented partner Bill Schwartz with its 2009 Human Relations Award for his leadership and outstanding civic activities in the fight against anti-Semitism, racism and bigotry.

Athena San Diego 2009 Pinnacle Awards
Cooley's San Diego office and associate Karen Hernandez were honored with Athena San Diego 2009 Pinnacle Awards for their efforts to develop and promote skilled and talented women within the San Diego technology, biosciences, healthcare, defense, energy, clean tech and services sectors. Ms. Hernandez was awarded with the Individual in Services award and Cooley was awarded the Corporation/Organization Award.

Dow Jones Private Equity Analyst—Most Active Law Firms
Dow Jones Private Equity Analyst ranked Cooley #5 in its national Most Active Law Firm list. Rankings were determined by the number of private equity and venture capital deals negotiated and closed in 2008. Cooley represented 386 deals as reported by Dow Jones.

Evergreen Venture Capital Association—2009 'Deal of the Year' Award
Inverness Medical Innovations' $130 million acquisition of Cooley client Free & Clear, a smoking cessation company, was named the "Deal of the Year" by the Evergreen Venture Capital Association – the alliance of Washington state venture capital firms. The Cooley team that represented the Seattle-based company included partners Sonya Erickson, Kristen Kercher, Renee Deming and Mark Windfeld-Hansen, special counsel Francis Fryscak, and associates Brian Finrow, Jason Barnwell, Eric Koester and Laura McDaniels.

Law360 Survey of Largest Practices in U.S.
Cooley's Securities and Intellectual Property practices were ranked #4 and #15 among all law firms in the United States, respectively, in a recent survey conducted by the legal news service Law360. The rankings are based on the number of U.S.-based attorneys in each practice.

The Project for Attorney Retention—Recognition for Female Partner Promotion
Cooley received an honorable mention from The Project for Attorney Retention in recognition of 43% of its 2009 partner class being female. The organization surveyed 100 firms and only 23 had a promotion percentage of 40 or higher. The nonprofit organization studies the advancement of women lawyers and work/life issues for all lawyers.

The State Bar of California—2009 President's Pro Bono Service Award
Cooley received the State Bar of California's 2009 President's Pro Bono Service Award in recognition of the Palo Alto office's pro bono contributions.
